Season 3 of the My Hero Academia anime was announced in the 44th issue of the 2017 Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.[1] It began airing in Japan on April 7, 2018 to September 29, 2018, and ran for 25 episodes, covering the Forest Training Camp Arc, Hideout Raid Arc, Provisional Hero License Exam Arc, and the beginning of the Shie Hassaikai Arc.

Summary[]

"Summer is here, and the heroes of Class 1-A and 1-B are in for the toughest training camp of their lives! A group of seasoned pros pushes everyone’s Quirks to new heights as the students face one overwhelming challenge after another. Braving the elements in this secret location becomes the least of their worries when routine training turns into a critical struggle for survival."[2]

Production[]

This season retains the same core staff and studio as the previous ones, except with the addition of Hitomi Odashima being listed as an assistant character designer. At a panel for an event held in October of 2017, the staff revealed that the season was being handled by Bones’ sub-studio C, which had previously worked on the anime's second season.[3] The sub-studio had already begun production on the season at the time of the announcement.[4] This season remained in the same time slot that the second season had previously occupied, airing every Saturday at 5:30pm in Japan on the Nippon TV (NTV) and Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation (YTV) stations.[5]

History[]

Days before the announcement page in the Jump magazine was released, the final episode of Season 2 confirmed a third season of the anime being in the works upon airing.[9] FUNimation Entertainment announced at its panel at New York Comic Con on October 5, 2017 that they will stream the season in 2018.[10]

A fan event held on November 26, 2017 confirmed that the season would premiere in April, with the unveiling of the season's first key visual. The visual, featuring Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and All Might, was drawn by Yoshihiko Umakoshi in order to commemorate the event.[4] The tenth 2018 issue of the Jump magazine further revealed the season's premiere date to be on April 7, 2018. The news of this date was also featured on the wraparound jacket band of the third volume of the spinoff manga, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.[11] A second visual for the season, featuring students of Class 1-A facing off against the League of Villains, was revealed on the official website for the anime.[12] The visual was also featured in the Jump magazine’s twelfth 2018 issue.

The character designs and the cast members for both Kota Izumi and the Wild, Wild Pussycats were first officially shown in the ninth issue of the 2018 Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. They had been previously teased by the anime's official Twitter,[13] and were fully revealed upon the issue's publication. The eleventh issue of the magazine followed a similar suit, revealing the character designs and voice actors for three villains new to the anime: Mustard, Moonfish, and Muscular. Twice, Spinner, Mr. Compress, and Magne eventually had both their designs and their voice actors announced with the release of the fifteenth issue of Jump.

A promotional video for this season was first shown on December 16, 2017 at Jump Festa 2018, before being streamed on the anime’s official website the very same day.[14] A second promotional video was first shown on television on March 3, 2018 at 5:30PM JST,[15] before being streamed on the website.[16]

At a press release on March 5, 2018, Funimation announced that the season will receive an English dub.[17] A trailer, featuring dubbed footage of the first promotional video, was uploaded to the company's YouTube channel on the same day. The dub will simultaneously premiere with the original Japanese broadcast for the first six episodes, like that of Season 2. Funimation also revealed that the season's subtitled broadcast will stream on both Crunchyroll and Hulu.

Episodes[]

This season ran for two cours, or 25 episodes, as confirmed by Funimation on March 5, 2018.[18] The first episode of the series, however, is a recap episode containing anime-original content partially based off Chapter 49.5.
