Nao Shimura ( () (むら) (なお) Shimura Nao?) was the wife of Kotaro Shimura and was the mother of their two children, Tenko and Hana Shimura. Not much is known about her currently, except that she died when her son’s Quirk went out of control.[1][2]

Appearance

Nao is a woman that is in her early thirties that is always seen with a worried expression on her face. Her bangs are parted in the middle from her face and light brown hair in uneven waves that grow to her shoulders in which Tomura inherited his hair from her.

She has numerous clothes in Tomura’s flashbacks ranging from a black shirt with jeans to a corduroy skirt.

Personality

Nao appeared as a kindly woman who constantly worries about her family. She tries to smooth over her family's problems caused by her husband's hatred towards heroes seen when she attempts to stop her husband from punishing her son.

She cared about her children greatly but couldn’t stand up to her husband due to knowing why he hated heroes. Nao also couldn’t completely console her son after the abuse he suffered from the hands of his father.

She wasn’t afraid to stand up to her husband if he was going too far in his abusive treatment of their children, which is seen when she confronted her husband for what he did to Tomura said if he was going to resort to violence, she wasn’t going to follow his rules.

Unfortunately, despite how much she loved her children, it wasn’t enough to calm her son down and was still killed when her son’s Quirk awakened and went out of control. Even while dying, she still tried to reach out to him, showing she still loved him.

History

At some point, she married Kotaro and had two children, Hana and Tenko.

One day, Tenko causes some trouble while pretending to be a hero, so Kotaro takes him outside as punishment. Nao begs her husband to not get violent, but still does nothing as Tenko is taken outside. As dinner is prepared, Nao asks her husband to bring Tenko back inside, noting that his allergies have gotten worse, though is unsure what he's allergic to. Later, she comforts her son, asking him if he still wants to be a hero. As Tenko explains the fun he had with his friend, he embraces Nao and asks her why Kotaro hates him. She states that his father doesn't hate Tenko, but that he knows how hard it is to be a hero.

When Kotaro discovers that Tenko went into his office, Nao watches with the rest of the family in shock and horror, and shouts when Kotaro smacks Tenko across the face. Afterwards, when Kotaro is in his office and looking at the past letters from his mother, Nao angrily confronts him, telling Kotaro that if he's going to resort to violence, then she wouldn't abide by his rules. She reminds Kotaro of what he said, that he wanted to build a happy family.

Nao is unintentionally slaughtered by her son.

Nao goes back outside with Chizuo and Mako and sees the dead bodies of Hana and her dog while the ground continues to crumble around Tenko. Even as the decay spreads to her foot, Nao still reaches out for her son in her final act of compassion before she is killed by Tenko's Quirk.[3]

Trivia

  • Nao's name is written with the kanji (直) meaning "repair". This is most likely a reference to her wanting to “repair” her family’s problems caused by her husband's hatred of heroes.
