Mako ( () () Mako?) was the maternal grandmother of Tenko Shimura and Hana Shimura, mother of Nao Shimura, and wife of Chizuo.

She died when her grandson's Quirk went out of control.[1]

Appearance[]

Mako was an elderly woman with a black bob cut and glasses.

Personality[]

Mako was shown to be a caring woman who loved her family. However, despite her caring nature, Mako is disgusted of how her son-in-law treats his children for admiring and talking about Heroes. It is implied that she is aware of her son-in-law's mother, Nana Shimura, being a Hero, with Kotaro not wanting anything to do with her since he believes that she abandoned him for the sake of others. Despite how much she hates the abuse, Mako was hesitant of talking to her son-in-law with treating her grandchildren with animosity, out of fear that he will kick her and her husband out.

While she did not intervene with Kotaro's abuse towards her grandchildren, she was shown consoling her grandson, Tenko, telling him not to cry as it would upset her as well. When Kotaro physically punished Tenko in anger, however, Mako and the rest of the family knew Kotaro crossed the line and joined her daughter and husband in confronting her son-in-law, wanting to put an end to the abuse.

Unfortunately, her caring nature was not enough to prevent Tenko's growing frustration and hatred, and that lead to her and her family being killed when the boy's Quirk spiralled out of control.

History[]

Tenko being abused by his father

Mako and the rest of the family couldn't help but watch Tenko getting assaulted by Kotaro.

She and her husband, Chizuo, lived in the house of their daughter, Nao, and her son-in-law, Kotaro, who permitted them to have an everyday role in their grandchildren's lives. Although Mako spent everyday with her family, she was disgusted by the abuse Kotaro subjected his son, Tenko, to for liking heroes. Everyday, she keeps witnessing Tenko's abuse growing more violent, especially when Kotaro kicked him out in the backyard to make him sleep for the rest of the night all because Tenko was playing Hero in the house. Mako asks Kotaro if he's being too strict to his children about liking Heroes.

Although Kotaro agreed, he still lamented on Tenko being unable to develop a Quirk despite being five years-old, and tells Mako and her husband they need to understand the misery of Heroes.

Later, after Mako consulted with Tenko, Hana ends up digging into their father's private studies and peeks into the picture of his mother, Nana Shimura. However, when Koatro discovered she went in his office, she said it was Tenko out of fear of being abused by him. Mako and the rest of the family watched as Kotaro took his anger out on Tenko. Later that night, Mako and rest of the family have had enough of Kotaro's abuse and came with her daughter and husband to confront him. Kotaro admits he went too far beating his son. His wife tells him that she is done with his rules if he is going to resort to violence, and she asks him if he didn't want to build a happy family. He replies that it wasn't supposed to be that way.[2]

Unfortunately, their actions to intervene came too late and would have severe consequences on Tenko. That night, Tenko's Decay Quirk manifested, and he ended up killing the family dog. When Hana came to apologize to Tenko, she screams in horror and is accidentally killed as well after he tries to get her to help him.

Mako, her husband, and daughter appeared after they heard Hana's scream and came to the backyard, only to be horrified after witnessing Tenko killing his sister. Begging for help, Tenko tries to reach his mother, but he touches the ground and his decay spreads, accidentally slaughtering them all in the process before being finally broken, killing his father with Decay and destroying the house.[3] All that remained of Mako was her hands, which were recovered by All For One and Tenko added them to his villain costume after he became Tomura Shigaraki.[4]

Synopsis[]

Meta Liberation Army Arc[]

As Tomura faces off against Re-Destro, he is suddenly overwhelmed by the sheer power of his Stress Quirk, forcing him into a corner. As several of the hands on his suit are unknowingly destroyed, Tomura's instincts start to overload, and he begins to remember his old memories. Tomura takes the preserved hand of his father out of his pocket and tells Re-Destro that he is right about him, that he truly exists only to destroy as he begins to remember when he was Tenko.[2]

After remembering his past to the time being alone and being found by All For One, Tomura finds resolve that those helped him become who he really is. Tomura then breaks away from his past trauma by crushing his father's hand.[5] With memories of his past returning, Tomura decides to break free of the shackles of his trauma and deems the hands of his family unnecessary before Tomura gleefully unleashes his full power with nothing holding him back anymore, laughing triumphantly with a desire to destroy anything that stands in his path.[6]

Paranormal Liberation War Arc[]

Nana Shimura appears to stop her grandson

Mako and the Shimura family are mentally holding back Tomura.

Even in death, the memories of the Shimuras continue to linger on within Tomura. As Tomura laid unconscious after his procedure to obtain the All For One Quirk was interrupted by the Heroes, he experienced a warped version of his past, culminating in a shadowy version of All For One appearing before him. Constructs of his family desperately try to stop him from following in All For One's footsteps, but Tomura destroys them without hesitation, telling them not to reject who he is.[7]

Final War Arc[]

Chapter 366

Mako's figure manifested in Tomura's left hand.

After months of recovering from his injuries, Tomura joins the Final War and ends up getting teleported to the U.A. Floating Fortress where the Heroes combat him. With his Quirks erased, his body undergoes a transformation as a result of the Quirk Singularity, due to Tomura's mental deterioration, as Tenko's memories of his family continue to flash through his head. As a result, in his ultimate defense mode where his body is completely covered in hands, his left hand is morphed into a visage of the Shimura family.[8]

It turns out Tomura was using these memories as a way of fighting back against All For One from within in his attempts to take over his body. With its purpose served after Izuku Midoriya pummels his body, and his Quirks returned, Tomura sheds off this defensive skin with his newly returned control and determination.[9]
