Template:Character Izuku Midoriya (緑谷出久 Midoriya Izuku?) is the main protagonist of Boku no Hero Academia. Though originally born without a Quirk, he manages to catch the attention of the legendary hero All Might, and has since become his close pupil and a student at Yuuei.

Izuku is a 15 year old boy with green eyes and black curly hair with green highlights. During his Junior High School days, he wore a black gakuran uniform with yellow buttons. In Yuuei, he wears the standard male uniform: a light grey suit over a white dress shirt and dark green dress pants, along with a red necktie. Izuku usually wears oversized red shoes. Though initially very skinny, Izuku has gained an array of well-developed abdominal muscles after his training with All Might.

Synopsis
Entrance Exam Arc
Izuku told to forget About Yuuei.
One day during school, it was revealed by Katsuki Bakugou that Izuku wishes to attend the prestigious "Yuuei" high school. His fellow students scoff at him and dismiss his ambitions as ridiculous. However, Izuku holds to his dreams and despite the mocking, he convicts himself to enter the school. The same day, while walking home, a villain fleeing the scene of a crime encounters Izuku. The villain had apparently escaped All Might earlier in the day. The villain decided that to avoid detection, he should take over Izuku's body. Just as Izuku fell into despair, All Might showed up and saved him. Stunned, Izuku asked for an autograph, but All Might left before he could ask the questions he had on his mind. In an effort to get All Might to stay, he latched on to All Might's leg and hanged on while he launched himself into the air.After a quick struggle they landed safely on a rooftop. Where Izuku asked if he could become a hero without an individuality. Telling All Might that he always wanted to be a hero and save people. Suddenly All Might's appearance drastically changes. He explains to him how a severe wound he received has placed a great restriction on his abilities, by only retaining his hero form 3 hours a day. All Might then saw a villain attacking from a distance. After a scene change down to the area of disaster, Izuku recognized Katsuki and ran into save him from the villain. As he went to grab him, All Might got to him first and attacked the villain. Katsuki became mad that he was saved and walked away. All Might then thanked Midoriya and offered him the chance to become a hero.[1]

All Might tells Izuku he's worthy to inherit his strength and that he has the power to transfer his Quirk to people. All Might then begins to train him at the Seaside Park by moving large pieces of garbage around, such as trucks, large office drawers, various craters, and bookshelves. After 10 months of training, the day of the entrance exam arrives. At six o'clock in the morning, at the last possible second, Izuku moves the final piece of garbage. All Might commends him and cuts off a piece of his hair and gives it to Izuku, who eats it, receiving his first dose, a very small piece of One For All. However, because the entrance exam is so close, Izuku must hurry to the school without getting used to the power.[2]

Izuku arrives at Yuuei for the Entrance Exam, excited that he will be able to have a chance at becoming a hero. As he runs forward and trips, but is saved by a girl's Quirk. The girl says she is nervous and asks if he is as well, to which he replies with a nod. The girl wishes him good luck while Izuku stands there awestruck, having talked to a girl for the first time in his life (even though he actually didn't talk to her). During the practical test, Izuku tries to destroy a robot, but finds himself too afraid to even move. Yuuga Aoyama appears and destroys the robot. Izuku realizes that he is running out of time. Suddenly, a huge robot appears and begins destroying the area. Izuku runs away but then he sees the same girl who helped him before on the ground about to be attacked by the huge robot. Izuku musters up the courage to fight the robot and, for the first time, uses One For All and attacks the huge robot with a devastating punch which completely destroys it and saves the life of the girl while shocking everyone else.[3]

However, Izuku's bones begin to crack due to having never used it before and begins falling. He tries to use Detroit Smash to land safely, but to no avail. The girl, whose life Izuku saved, uses her Quirk to allow him to land safely. The practical test is declared over, much to Izuku's sadness as he did not get a single point. Recovery Girl then heals his heavy injuries. One week later, Izuku receives a letter that will determine whether he was accepted into Yuuei or not. Izuku opens the letter in his room and a screen with All Might on it appears. He apologises for not contacting Izuku earlier and informs him that he will be working as a teacher at Yuuei. All Might tells him that he did fine on the written test, but since he scored zero points during the practical test he has failed. However, All Might tells him that because he rescued someone during the practical test, he earned 60 points, meaning he has passed and therefore being accepted into Yuuei, much to Izuku's joy and happiness.[4]
Quirk Apprehension Test Arc
During the arc, Izuku is tested on the power and use of his quirk. He tries to throw a ball as far as he can using his quirk, but Shouta Aizawa stops him by using his quirk. He eventually powers up he end of his fingers and launches the ball, but in the end, gets last place.[5]
Battle Trial Arc

Izuku gets teamed up with Ochako Uraraka and must stop Katsuki Bakugou and Tenya IIda from blowing up a fake Nuclear Bomb. They successfully infiltrate the building and look around the corners to see if anyone was coming, where Katsuki ambushes them. Izuku manages to save Ochako from Katsuki's attack, but half of his mask is burned off in the process. As Katsuki is about to attack again, Izuku appears before him, grabs his right arm and throws him into the ground, knowing that he would use his right arm to attack. Izuku tells Katsuki that he has analysed and taken notes (the same notes Katsuki blew up and threw away in the past) on many Heroes including him. He announces that he is no longer the "Deku" who was a loser, but the "Deku" who's vibe is never giving up, much to Katsuki's fury.[6]

Izuku tells Ochako to go on ahead while he fights Katsuki. He manages to grab Katsuki's leg with the Capture Tape, but Katsuki breaks free using an Explosion. Knowing he's at a disadvantage, Izuku retreats in order to think of a strategy. Izuku contacts Ochako and asks her where she is, telling him she's in the middle room on the fifth floor. Afterwards, Katsuki finds Izuku and uses his bracer that has been storing up a lot of sweat to cause a huge Explosion, destroying a large portion of the building. However, Izuku manages to survive the blast and calls Katsuki insane for doing that, but a seathing Katsuki demands that Izuku use his Quirk.[7]

Izuku and Katsuki continue their fight, with Izuku trying to land a punch on Katsuki, but Katsuki launches himself behind Izuku using an Explosion and uses another Explosion to hit Izuku's back. Katsuki then hits Izuku's right arm, grabs it and throws him into the ground. Izuku is unable to think of a strategy in the midst of battle due to Katsuki not giving him any openings and realises that Katsuki is simply far stronger than he is. Izuku decides to use his Quirk and informs Ochako to grab onto something. Instead of hitting Katsuki, Izuku aims his Detroit Smash into the ceiling, destroying the fifth floor's ground, but Izuku is forced to take the full brunt of Katsuki's Explosion. Although Izuku was unable to defeat Katsuki, it did distract Tenya long enough for Ochako to grab the fake Nuclear Bomb, allowing both Izuku and Ochako to win.[8]

Izuku is then taken away on a stretcher to have his wound attended to by Recovery Girl. After spending most of the day having his wounds healed, Izuku returns to his classroom. As he enters, Izuku is commended by many of his classmates for his performance during the battle trial. Ochako asks if he is alright, to which he replies that he is fine. Izuku then asks her where Katsuki is. Although many of his classmates try to stop him, Izuku goes to find Katsuki. Izuku finds him and tells him his secret: that he obtained his Quirk from someone else in order to convince him that he had not been deceiving him.[9]
Ultimate Space & Jams Arc

Izuku is confronted by a reporter from the media, asking him questions about All Might, but Izuku makes an exuse to escape from the reporter. In class, Shouta Aizawa makes a remark about Izuku's performance in the battle trial and encourages him to work harder. Afterwards, Izuku is elected as Class President after the class votes, much to his shock. In the lunch room, Izuku is unsure if he is the right one for the task, but is assured that he will be just fine by Tenya after giving some words of confidence. Izuku then learns that Tenya is from a prestigious family of super heroes. As they continue talking, the siren goes off and everyone begins evacuating. After Tenya stops the chaotic evacuation, Izuku returns to class where he decides to step down as Class President and gives the position to Tenya, deeming him more worthy of the position than him.[10]

In a flashback, Izuku is seen speaking to All Might telling him that he revealed to Katsuki about the secret of the One For All Quirk. However, All Might isn't angry about it since Katsuki interpreted it as nonsense and tells Izuku to keep the secret to himself and no one else since if the villains knew about his secret, all of them would probably want to steal his Quirk. In the present, Izuku changes into his gym clothes (since his Hero Costume was tattered during his battle with Katsuki in the battle trial) in preparation for the rescue trial. On the way to the rescue trial training area, Tsuyu Asui says to Izuku that his Quirk reminds her of All Might, much to his shock. Izuku tries to explain that his Quirk isn't like All Might's, but Eijirou Kirishima says that All Might isn't injured by his Quirk, which makes his and Izuku's Quirk different. When Katsuki is being teased, Izuku is surprised to see it happen. At the rescue trial training area, Izuku is seen listening to No. 13's explanation, being impressed by it. However, before anything else could happen, the villains show up, much to Izuku's shock.[11]

Izuku is seen evacuating with his class. However, he is suddenly warped away by Black Mist to the flood area of the Ultimate Space and Jams. In the water, he is then confronted by a fish like villain who prepares to devour him, but Tsuyu saves him and throws him onto a boat along with Minoru. Izuku thanks her for saving him. Then, he tries to figure out why the villains want to kill All Might, pondering whether they have a greater motive other than him being the Symbol of Peace. He then decides that the only course of action they have: they fight to win.[12]

Izuku says that Tsuyu was teleported (along with him and Minoru Mineta) to an area (the flood zone) that allows her to be at full strength and then deduces that the villains do not know what their Quirks are. He then says that although the villains beat them in sheer numbers and experience, the one advantage they do have is the element of surprise (their Quirks as the villains do not know about them). After Minoru explains his Quirk, Izuku remains silent. He then tells Minoru that his Quirk is great but they just have to find a way to make it effective. Izuku jumps off the ship and then uses Delaware Smash on the surface of the water, causing the water to spread out. Tsuyu then grabs Izuku with her tongue and Minoru throws his sticky substance into the spread out water. The spread out water converges in the center along with Minoru's sticky substance (with the villains being pulled in), causing all the villains in the water to be stuck together by Minoru's Quirk. Izuku then escapes along with Minoru and Tsuyu, with Tsuyu saying that he was impressive.[13]

Izuku says that their priority is to call for help, that they can take the waterside to the exit, but after remembering that Shouta is at the central plaza fighting a large group of villains, Izuku decides that they should head to the central plaza and try to be of some assistance to Shouta. However, after reaching the central plaza, Izuku is horrified to see Shouta's condition after he is defeated by a monstrous villain.[14]

Izuku is surprised to hear Shigaraki Tomura that they are retreating, pondering that they practically came and did nothing, wondering what they were thinking. Shigaraki then attacks Tsuyu, prompting Izuku to leap in to save her. His attack however is intercepted by Noumu who takes the punch instead. Izuku sees that his arm isn't breaking and realises that he must have unlocked the ability to adjust the power output. Despite the punch being head on, it had no effect on Noumu, must to Izuku's shock. Noumu grabs Izuku's arm, but Tsuyu wraps her tongue around him. Suddenly, All Might appears, much to Izuku's happiness.[15] Izuku is then rescued by All Might along with Minoru and Tsuyu. After seeing All Might in a bad position, Izuku decides to help him, but Katsuki's attack stops him.[16]

Izuku then watches the battle between All Might and Noumu.[17] After Noumu's defeat, Shigaraki and Black Mist attempt to finish off All Might, but Izuku intervenes their attempt by running in front of All Might to protect him. Izuku's intervention gives the Heroes enough time to reach the U.S.J, forcing Shigaraki and Black Mist to stop their attempt. After Shigaraki and Black Mist are dealt with by No. 13, Izuku is seen on the ground, crying, as he was unable to do anything to help. However, All Might tells him that is not the case; because if Izuku did not intervene, he would have been dead and thanks him for saving his life.[18] Afterwards, Izuku is taken to Yuuei's Nursery to have his injuries attended to.[19]
Sports Festival Arc

The next day, Izuku listens to Shouta Aizawa's announcement about Yuuei's Sports Festival. He asks Minoru whether he has watched the heroes sports festival or not, to which Minoru says he has. After end of the fourth period, Izuku is seen with Ochako Uraraka and Tenya Iida and listens to Ochako's reason for becoming a heroine and her history, to which he replies that with her Quirk, she would be able to build for free. After the discussion, All Might arrives asking Izuku to have lunch with him. In the resting room, All Might asks him how he's handling his Quirk and Izuku replies that he's gained adjustment to the Quirk, saying that he didn't break his arm when punching Noumu, which pleases him. All Might then says that his time as the Symbol of Peace is heading to an end, much to Izuku's sadness. All Might says that Yuuei's Sports Festival is an event the whole country will be watching and tells Izuku that in the event he wants the whole world to know that he's the new generation's "All Might" and the future Symbol of Peace, which shocks Izuku.[20]

All Might states that he wants Izuku to demonstrate his full potential to everyone at the Sports Festival. However, Izuku thinks that he won't get much attention as well as his inability to go and stand out. All Might states that the difference between someone who aspires to the top and someone who doesn't will have a huge influence when he steps up and steps forward in society. All Might understands Izuku's feeling towards his condition and won't force him to do anything, but asks him to remember his feelings during the time he cleaned up the Seaside Park. During the two weeks before the Sports Festival, Izuku trains himself. On the day of the Sports Festival while Class 1-A prepares, Shouto Todoroki approaches Izuku and tells him that objectively, he is stronger than Izuku. He then says that All Might has a deep interest in him and says that he doesn't care why. Shouto then states that he will defeat Izuku. Izuku admits that he is definitely strong and could beat more than half the people in their class, but states to him that everyone (even from the other departments) are giving it their all hoping to be the best and that he will also give it his all. He then walks out to the Sports Festival with his head up high, stating to himself that All Might can retire.[21]

Once the Obstacle Course Race begins, Izuku is seen trying to get past the narrow gate. Izuku manages to avoid having his feet frozen to the ground by Shouto. After getting past by the narrow gate, Izuku watches as Minoru gets hit by a robot, worried about his safety. However, he himself is confronted by robots, deciding that now is the time to put his head to use, no longer shaking in fear unlike in the Entrance Exam.[22]

Izuku dodges a robot's attack, then picks up a piece of metal and waits for the robot to approach him. As the robot gets momentum, Izuku slices it's head off with the metal, not wanting to use his Quirk so early in the first phase. Izuku then manages to get across the fall and heads to the land mine field of the Obstacle Race. Realizing that he is far behind, Izuku gathers as many landmines as possible and jumps onto the metal plate that he used earlier. Then, the landmines detonates and an explosion occurs, launching Izuku into the air and straight towards the people in the lead.[23]

Katsuki and Shouto and pass above them, then in midair he realized that the two of them will quickly pass him, so thinking fast he uses the plate again to blow dust in their eyes to momentary stun them to get first place in the race. Izuku was given the first placed and he was allowed to advance to the second event of the Sports Festival, which is a Human Cavalry Battle. Izuku then finds out that he is worth 10 million points for the Human Cavalry Battle, because he got first place on the Race Course, which horrifies him.[24]

Izuku has trouble finding team mates, but then Ochako decides to team up with him, which makes him happy. Izuku then tries to team up with Tenya as he has great synergy with Ochako's Quirk but he politely declines, much to Izuku's disappointment. Mei Hatsume from the Department of Support approaches Izuku and declares that she wants to team up with him. Although he could not team up with Tenya, Izuku decides to let her team up with him and Ochako. He then looks for a final member for his team, one with power. Eventually, Izuku chooses Fumikage Tokoyami to be their final member. Izuku is then seen mounted on his horse. He then tells Fumikage, Mei and Ochako that he is glad to be their teammates.[25]

The event begins and Fumikage along with his teammates are about to be assaulted by Tetsutetsu's team and Tooru's team. Izuku and his team try to escape but they find themselves stuck in Juuzou's Quirk. Izuku tells Ochako and Mei to look away and uses the jetpack that Mei gave to him earlier, allowing him and his teammates to escape into the air. Kyouka attacks but Fumikage uses his Dark Shadow to defend his team. Izuku praises Fumikage and his Quirk for being such a defensive balwark. Izuku and his teammates land safely thanks to Ochako's Quirk and Mei's equipment. Then, Izuku and his team mates are attacked by Tetsutetsu's team again but Fumikage uses his Dark Shadow to block them. Suddenly, Mezou and his team attack them. Under pressure, Izuku decides to escape by flying into the air, but they are suddenly attacked by Katsuki. Izuku warns Fumikage about the impending danger which Fumikage responds to by having his Dark Shadow block Katsuki's Explosion. After landing again, Izuku says that they should have an easier time now, but takes those words back when they are confronted by Shouto and his team.[26]

Denki unleashes a large amount of electricity which Fumikage's Dark Shadow protects them from. Afterwards, Izuku notices that the Jetpack doesn't work anymore. As he remembered Dark Shadow's weakness, he realized that Fumikage's Quirk was useless against Kaminari's electricity. Taking that and finding out that Shouto doesn't used his left hand’s power, he decided to only move to his left side to dodge his attacks. But this strategy fails when Tenya uses his new move Reciprocating Burst which allows Shouto to take his 10 million headband in an instant, shocking Izuku. In distress, he ordered his team to go after them, however, Fumikage suggests to go and attack another team, but Izuku replies that he doesn't know the point distribution of the other teams. As all hope seemed lost, Ochako pushed them forward as she told him that they will get the headband back and will not fail. Suddenly, Izuku realized that it was just his points; he remembered that he was carrying the dreams and hopes of their teammates. With his new found resolve, he attacked Shouto using his Quirk One For All, as a symbol of their unity.[27]

Not wanting to hit Shouto directly, Izuku uses his Quirk to make wind pressure which knocks away Shouto's left arm. Izuku uses the opportunity to take one of the headbands (which he thinks is the ten million headband) from the defenseless Shouto succeeding in doing so. However, Izuku is shocked to see that the headband he took of not the ten million headband and it is instead a seventy point headband. For the last ten seconds, Izuku and his team try to attack Shouto's team again, but the ten seconds are up and the Human Cavalry Battle ends, much to Izuku's sadness. He tries to apologize to his team, but Fumikage interjects, stating that like him he wanted to take back the ten million headband but says that they will have to settle for the headband he took. Fumikage's Dark Shadow is revealed to have a 615 point headband in its mouth, with Fumikage saying that he took this headband from where Shouto's guard was at its weakest; the one on his head; Fumikage then says that this action was possible thanks to Izuku creating an opening at the last second. Thanks to Fumikage's and Izuku's actions, he along with his team place fourth, allowing them to advance and participate in the final event, with Izuku crying in happiness. After the lunch break begins and everyone else was taking a break, Izuku is seen with Shouto in private in a hallway, with Izuku asking what is it that he wanted to talk about.[28]

Shouto asks whether Izuku is an illegitimate child of All Might or not, but Izuku states that is not the case. Shouto then tells Izuku about him; that he was conceived from a Quirk Marriage so that his father, Endeavor could raise him to be a hero that surpasses All Might; in the past, his mother threw boiling water on him because she despised his left side and that he will surpass Izuku without using his fire power as a way of disavowal-ling his father. Shouto's story leaves Izuku shocked and speechless. Izuku notices that while they have the same goal, they are completely different. Izuku struggles to say something but as Shouto leaves, Izuku says that he has always needed help from others and that the reason he is standing here is because others have always saved him. He then says that he wants to be like All Might and wants to become strong enough to accomplish that and be number one. Izuku states that it may be a trifling motive compared to Shouto's, he still cannot afford to lose since he wants to payback the people who helped him along the way by not losing. Izuku then states that he will take Shouto's declaration and echo it back with honesty and courage; that he will defeat him as well.[29]

The final event is a tournament event and Izuku's opponent in the first round is Hitoshi Shinsou. When Hitoshi approaches Izuku, Mashirao warns Izuku not to respond to his provocations. During the recreational events, Mashirao helps calm Izuku's nerves by giving him information on his opponent's Quirk and its weakness as well as telling Izuku to beat Hitoshi for his sake. Before the first fight begins, All Might goes to see Izuku, who says that he has gained control of One For All, but Izuku denies this, saying that he can only increase his strength by a minuscule amount, with All Might replying that he is hardly a five on a scale of one to a hundred, which saddens Izuku. All Might tells Izuku not to frown and encourages him to smile when he is full of anxiety and fear, saying as well that he is always watching Izuku. Izuku steps out to the ring to confront Hitoshi. After Hitoshi calls Mashirao an idiot for throwing away the opportunity to participate in the tournament, the fight begins and Izuku, who is angered by Hitoshi's insults, attacks him, but mysteriously stops moving.[30]

Izuku finds himself to be completely immobile, but when Hitoshi orders him to go out of bounds and starts walking towards the exit of the ring. Still conscious, he tries to stop himself but finds that his body is moving on its own. As Izuku is about to reach the out of bounds of the ring, he sees mysterious shadows by the entrance and suddenly, his One For All Quirk activates by itself and causing him to hit his stomach with his two fingers. This action breaks Izuku free of Hitoshi's Quirk and stops his advance towards the out of bounds zone. Izuku then wonders what happened, as he didn't activate his Quirk on his own but after thinking about the information on One For All that All Might gave to him, he thinks that the people he saw were the lingering presence of the people who inherited One For All throughout the ages and hypothesizes that their presence in One For All helped him break free of Hitoshi's Quirk. Now broken free, Izuku charges towards Hitoshi and ignores his provocations, keeping his mouth shut. He reaches Hitoshi and tries pushing him out of the ring, but he's punched him in the face in retaliation. Despite this, Izuku continues to try and push him out of the ring. Hitoshi grabs him by the neck, but Izuku counters by grabbing Hitoshi's arm and throws Hitoshi over his shoulder, slamming him hard onto the ground and in the process, causes Hitoshi's feet to land out of bounds. Midnight declares Hitoshi out of bounds, making Izuku the winner advancing to Round 2.[31]

Immediately afterwards, Izuku asks Hitoshi why he wants to be in the Department of Heroics, to which Hitoshi replies he can't help what he longs to be. Hitoshi declares one day, he'll enter the Department of Heroics and show everyone that he'll become a hero. Telling Izuku that if he keeps falling for his mind control, he will pull the rug under his feet and not to lose too pitifully out there. Izuku then heads to Recovery Girl's infirmary to have his wound attended to. After his wounds are fixed, Izuku tells All Might about the mysterious shadows he saw, saying the shadows helped him break free of Hitoshi's quirk and asks him if what he saw were the people who wove the power of One For All. All Might replies that he too saw something similar to what Izuku saw in his younger days. All Might theorizes the people he saw were imprints of those who have used One For All but not the sort who have a will on their own and concludes that Izuku broke Hitoshi's spell not because of the predecessors of One For All but because his unwilling of willpower caused the vision to appear, but All Might says not to dwell on it and go watch the next match. Izuku sits next to Tenya and Ochako who saved a seat for him. When Shouto freezes Hanta, creating a huge ice glacier in the process, Izuku watches in shock and horror. When Shouto unfreezes Hanta with his fire power after winning, Izuku notes that what he saw seemed immensely sad.[32]

Izuku then watches the other matches, writing down notes on his opponents, such as counter strategies. Ochako sees this, to which Izuku replies that it's a hobby of his and it's a great chance to observe the Quirks of everyone outside their class. Izuku then tells her he's compiled information on their class as well, causing her to comment that he's been incredible since they first met. Izuku then goes to the waiting room to see Ochako. When Ochako expresses her nervousness in facing Katsuki, Izuku offers her notes of a strategy against Katsuki based on her Quirk. However, Ochako politely turns down his offer, thanking him for offering a strategy for her, claiming she'll be all right and they'll meet at the final match. Izuku, along with Tenya, go to their seats in the stadium to watch the match.[33]

Tenya asks Izuku what his counter strategy for Katsuki was, to which Izuku replies that the strategy involved striking fast to gain the advantage. Izuku watches the match and becomes worried when Ochako gets hit by Katsuki's explosions. After Ochako collapses and is declared the loser of the match, Izuku expresses sadness.[34]

Izuku leaves his seat and walks away. Along the way, he encounters Katsuki and congratulates him on winning his match. When Katsuki accuses him of giving Ochako strategies to use against him. Izuku replies that he didn't give Ochako any strategies and that she made those strategies herself. Izuku leaves and goes to the waiting room to see Ochako. Izuku asks if she's hurt, to which she replies that most of her injuries are healed and only has minor bruises. As Izuku leaves, Ochako apologizes to him for taking up his preparation time, saying that she'll watch his match and tells him to do his best. When Izuku leaves the waiting room and walks to the ring, he runs into Endeavor, much to his shock. Endeavor tells him that he has a great Quirk and that in terms of pure power it rivals All Might's power. Izuku begins to walk away, not wanting to be anywhere near Endeavor. He stops walking when Endeavor tells him about Shouto's duty to surpass All Might and that he must do his best not to give Shouto a disgraceful match. As Endeavor walks away, Izuku tells Endeavor that he's not All Might and that Shouto isn't him. Izuku them steps out to the tournament ring to face Shouto.[35]

The match begins and Izuku prepares to charge. Shouto strikes first by sending a wave of ice towards Izuku. Izuku flicks his finger and sends a blast of wind pressure towards the incoming ice, destroying it and knocking Shouto back but at the cost of breaking his right hand's middle finger. Izuku sends another blast of wind pressure (breaking another finger in the process) against Shouto which strikes him but Shouto creates ice behind himself to stop himself from being blown out of the ring. Shouto sends another wave of ice against Izuku but Izuku counters by sending another blast of wind pressure to destroy it. Shouto closes in on Izuku and knocks him back and in the process sends ice towards Izuku which freezes his foot. As Shouto begins to attack, the immobilized Izuku uses his left arm to send a huge blast of wind pressure against Shouto to protect himself and in the process, frees him from the ice. Izuku, now that his left arm is broken, is tired and battered from the injuries caused by his Quirk. Shouto decides to end the match but Izuku sends a blast of wind pressure against Shouto's ice with his broken right hand, destroying it. Izuku states that Shouto has a limit to how much generated cold he can take but he can use his left side to solve that problem. Izuku goes on to say to Shouto that he thinks that he can win only using half of his power but he hasn't even been able to land a single scratch on him. Izuku, clenching his broken right hand into a fist, demands that Shouto go to him directly and fight him.[36]

An enraged Shouto runs toward Izuku to face him head on. Izuku prepares to use a One For All enhanced punch. Shouto's movement starts to lag due to his frostbite, allowing Izuku to successfully hit Shouto in the stomach with his One For All enhanced punch, knocking Shouto down onto the floor and injuring him. However, Izuku is hit by Shouto's ice in the process of punching him. Shouto manages to get back up and launches another wave of ice against Izuku who realizes that Shouto's ice attacks are becoming weaker. Izuku sends a blast of wind pressure against Shouto, which destroys his ice and knocks him back. Shouto asks Izuku why he is going so far, to which Izuku replies that he wants to live up to his mentor's expectations and become an awesome hero who is able to answer people with a smile. As Izuku hits Shouto, Izuku remarks that everyone is giving it their all to become awesome Heroes and says that while he doesn't understand Shouto's circumstances or resolution, Izuku tells Shouto that he thinks the idea of Shouto becoming Number One without his full strength and that he is doing it to disown someone is a joke. Izuku then hits Shouto successfully again thanks to Shouto's frostbite preventing him from moving. As Shouto gets back up, Izuku tells Shouto that the fire power he has is his power not his father's. Shouto, moved by Izuku's words, activates his fire power and states to Izuku that he too will become a hero, causing Izuku to crack a smile, happy to see his opponent finally giving it his all like himself.[37]

Izuku powers up the usage of One For All in his left leg and right arm. Izuku jumps forward using his enhanced One For All left leg to do so, avoiding Shouto's ice and launches a wind pressure blast against Shouto. Izuku's attack, along with Shouto's, collides into Cementoss's cement pillars, which causes a huge shock wave that blasts both Izuku and Shouto. After the dust and smoke clears up, Izuku is seen standing out of bounds. Izuku finally succumbs to his grievous wounds and falls flat onto the ground. Shouto is declared the winner and thus Izuku is eliminated from, the tournament event. Izuku is taken to Reovery Girl's office to have his wounds attended to. Izuku, even though he is weak and in pain from his severe injuries, apologizes to All Might for being unable to live up to his expectations and that all he wanted to do was help Shouto after seeing his sadness. Izuku then asks All Might for his forgiveness. All Might tells Izuku that his match was simply an unfortunate outcome but praises Izuku for helping Shouto with his problem, saying that reaching out and helping people with their personal problems is one of the principal qualities of being a Hero, happy that Izuku has such a quality.[38]
Izuku receives surgery from Recovery Girl, which heals his grievous wounds. After the surgery, she warns Izuku to not abuse his Quirk again. Izuku leaves Recovery Girl's room with All Might and they walk down the corridor. Izuku sadly tells All Might that he thinks that someone else should be his successor. However, All Might tells Izuku that he used to be Quirkless just like him, which surprises Izuku. Izuku says to All Might that he never knew about that information causing All Might to reply that Izuku never asked him. All Might tells Izuku that he chose him to be his successor at first due to him being similar to his former self and admits to Izuku that he has surpassed his expectations after seeing Izuku's actions. All Might says to Izuku that only he will be able to truly shine with the power of One For All. Having been cheered up by his mentor, Izuku apologizes to All Might. Izuku is told by All Might to watch the rest of the Sports Festival and goes to do so. Izuku arrives back to the tournament event and watches Eijirou and Katsuki's match. Tenya comes and is glad to see that Izuku's surgery went well. Tenya tells Izuku that he will make ample use of his fight with Shouto. After Tenya tells Izuku how he defeated Ibara, Izuku asks if his brother is watching, to which Tenya says that he was but is busy with work. After Katsuki defeats Eijirou, Tenya tells Izuku that he has to leave for his fight. Izuku watches Tenya's fight with Shouto and is saddened to see Tenya lose.[39]
Izuku, along with Ochako and Tenya, watches the match between Fumikage and Katsuki. Izuku notes that if Katsuki didn't find out about Fumikage's weakness, Fumikage would stand a better chance at winning. After the match between Fumikage and Katsuki ends, Izuku wonders how the match between Katsuki and Shouto will turn out.[40]
Both Izuku and Ochako agree with Tenya about watching the final match closely for revenge later. Izuku watches the final match between Katsuki and Shouto. During the match, Izuku yells at Shouto to keep fighting.[41]
Izuku watches the closing ceremony of Yuuei's Sports Festival. After Tenya told him about what happened to his brother and that he had to leave the Sports Festival, Izuku wishes for Tenya to be safe. After the Sports Festival is finished, the next day at his home during breakfast, Izuku and his mother talk to each other with Izuku saying that she almost had a rougher time than she did. Izuku's mother talks to Izuku about his Quirk, saying that it is a risky power and that risk doesn't put her mind at ease but she will keep cheering him on. Izuku realizes that all he has been is been making the people watching over him worry about him. Izuku decides that he needs a method of his own that won't make people worry for him and once he finds that method, it will truly be his starting line. Izuku's mother asks him if he wants to watch the replay of the Sports Festival, to which Izuku says he will later.[42]
Field Training Arc
Two days after the Sports Festival, Izuku is on a train to Yuuei. While on the train, some of the passengers recognize him from the Sports Festival, acknowledging his prowess. At Yuuei, Tenya is running and passes by Izuku, telling him that they should be at least 10 minutes earlier for school. After arriving inside, Tenya tells Izuku that he doesn't have to be worried about his older brother as he will be fine and apologizes for causing him unnecessary concern. In class during the Hero Informatics period, Minoru comments that he was afraid that they wouldn't get any nominations to which Izuku agrees. Afterwards, Class 1-A have to decide on Hero names. Izuku ponders that he came up with Hero names resembling All Might and now that he has inherited his power he cannot take any of his thought up Hero names. Izuku is the last student yet to reveal his Hero name. Izuku reveals his Hero name, causing some of his classmates to comment if he is okay with it, to which Izuku replies that up until now he didn't like it at all. Izuku says, however, that someone came along and changed the meaning of the name making him happy. Izuku reveals his Hero name to be Deku, saying with confidence that Deku will be his Hero name.[43]
After Class 1-A is finished formulating their Hero names, Izuku is given a list of 40 work places he can choose from so that he can train from one of them. Ochako tells Izuku that she plans to train at Battle Hero Gunhead's Office with Izuku noting that it is an office specializing in combat and thought that she wanted to specialize in life saving like No. 13. Ochako replies with an explanation to which Izuku agrees with. She then notes that Izuku is shaking and he replies that he is doing an isometric exercise. After school that day, All Might appears in front of Izuku as he is about to leave class. All Might and Izuku walk along the corridor. All Might says that Izuku received a nomination, much to Izuku's surprise. All Might tells Izuku that the person who nominated him was Gran Torino. All Might explains that Gran Torino was a Pro Hero who taught at Yuuei for one year and that Gran Torino was his homeroom teacher. All Might says that Gran Torino was a close friend of his predecessor, but now he is in retirement. All Might says that Gran Torino knows about the One For All Quirk which is the reason why he must have nominated Izuku. Izuku notes that even All Might is nervous from talking about Gran Torino, wondering how scary the retired Pro Hero was. All Might tells Izuku that while it is his duty to train him, he should select Gran Torino as his work place of choice and go see what he can learn from him. Before leaving, All Might informs Izuku that his Hero costume has been repaired. Thus, Izuku chooses Gran Torino as his work place to train at. On the day of the work place training, Izuku is at the train station with his class so that he can travel to the work place of his choice by train. As Tenya walks to his train, Izuku tells Tenya that if he needs someone to talk to he can talk to him and Ochako (with her nodding in agreement) as they are his friends. Tenya replies that he will and walks away. After the train stops, Izuku arrives near his destination and walks to Gran Torino's home address. Izuku arrives at a dilapidated building. Izuku enters and tries introducing himself but is horrified to find the elderly retired Pro Hero on the floor seemingly dead. Gran Torino suddenly gets up, explaining to the boy that he was carrying a plate of sausages with ketchup on them but fell and got ketchup everywhere. Gran Torino asks the boy his name to which Izuku tells him his name and that he is from Yuuei. However, Gran Torino does not recall nominating him. He suddenly remembers, calling Izuku "Toshinori" in the process, much to Izuku's annoyance. Izuku tries to leave the apartment to speak to All Might on his phone, but Gran Torino asks Izuku to fight him with One For All, saying that he wants to see how well Izuku can handle One For All, wanting him to put his Hero costume on and fight him. Gran Torino once again forgets who Izuku is. Thinking that Gran Torino is playing games with him, Izuku declares to the elderly Hero that he needs to learn how to control his power as soon as possible since All Might is running out of time, telling the elderly Hero that he doesn't have time to be fooling around. Izuku starts leaving, visibly disappointed. Suddenly, Gran Torino jumps and leaps in front of Izuku at an incredible speed, stopping Izuku from leaving. Gran Torino tells Izuku that since Izuku has a goal to learn how to control his power, then he has all the more reason to stay. The elderly Hero asks Izuku to use One For All and fight him.[44]
Izuku puts on his Hero costume (which has not only being repaired but redesigned as well) and faces Gran Torino in a mock battle. However, Izuku is unable to keep up with Gran Torino's incredible jumping speed and is constantly hit. Izuku prepares to use One For All and predicts that Gran Torino will attack him from behind. Izuku's prediction turns out to be correct, allowing Izuku to get into position to hit Gran Torino, but Gran Torino pushes Izuku's arm out of the way. The mock battle ends with Gran Torino telling Izuku that he is too rigid and his awareness is disjointed which are some reasons he is unable to use One For All properly. Gran Torino explains that Izuku's main problem is that thinks One For All is special. Izuku asks Gran Torino to explain what he means, but the elderly Hero tells Izuku to figure that out for himself and goes to eat something. Izuku ponders deeply about his problem with controlling One For All that Gran Torino pointed out. Izuku suddenly figures out what Gran Torino meant; that he has been thinking of One For All as a trump card which has made him "rigid" in its use (unable to use it properly) and that in order to control One For All properly he must be "flexible" (thinking of One For All as a simple body function). Izuku goes to write this crucial discovery down in his notebook, dumbfounded that he didn't realize the problem sooner when it was in front of him all the time. Izuku decides to drill in the repetition of thinking One For All flatly as a simple body function.[45]
During the night on his first day, Izuku steps out of Gran Torino's apartment and goes to an alley. In the alley, Izuku decides to test out his discovery of using One For All as a normal function by jumping over a fence. Izuku uses One For All in his legs while thinking of One For All as a normal body function. However, Izuku fails to jump over the fence. Izuku concludes that he needs to put more strength of One For All into his legs and continues his self training. In the morning, Izuku tells Gran Torino that he put what he discovered as practice but found it to be difficult to do so. Gran Torino replies that it is difficult due to just discovering how to use One For All more effectively and comments that All Might in his younger days used One For All like it was normal which is why All Might's way of guidance is wrong. Izuku becomes fascinated from hearing about All Might's younger days, to which Gran Torino replies that he made All Might spew during a practical training session, commenting that All Might could not handle the power emotionally due to being entrusted to it by a late friend. Izuku asks Gran Torino about All Might's predecessor, much to Gran Torino's surprise. Someone arrives with a delivery for Gran Torino and Izuku goes to fetch the delivery. The delivery turns out to be a new microwave as Gran Torino broke his old microwave during his mock battle with Izuku. Gran Torino decides to have breakfast, telling Izuku to set up the new microwave. After doing so, Izuku heats up his and Gran Torino's breakfast which is taiyaki. Izuku serves Gran Torino his taiyaki, however, the taiyaki is still cold. Izuku is confused as to why the taiyaki is still cold, to which Gran Torino tells Izuku that he didn't put the microwave's plate in properly and as a result didn't turn and only a part of the taiyaki was heated. Izuku suddenly realizes the next problem as to why he cannot control One For All; that he has only used One For All on one body part and not using it on his whole body. Izuku activates One For All and sends its power throughout his entire body. Gran Torino asks if Izuku can move while using One For All throughout his body, to which Izuku replies that he is not sure. Gran Torino then asked if he can test whether Izuku can move around while using One For All throughout his body. Which Izuku replies that he can test him.[46]
Gran Torino tells Izuku that if he can move around while having One For All coursing through his body, then he will be drawing a clear line from how he was during the Sports Festival. Gran Torino says that their mock battle will be three minutes for starters. The mock battle begins and Gran Torino hits Izuku from behind, stopping the flow of One For All throughout Izuku's body. Gran Torino attacks Izuku from all directions while Izuku stands helplessly unable to counter. After falling to the ground, Izuku realizes that Gran Torino's speed is too fast for him to counter and decides to regroup. Izuku crawls under the couch and activates One For All throughout his body again. Gran Torino heads towards the couch, but suddenly, Izuku punches the couch away, sending it flying and stopping Gran Torino's attack. Now that One For All is flowing throughout his body, Izuku leaps into the air and nearly manages to hit Gran Torino, however, the elderly Hero manages to dodge in the nick of time. Gran Torino jumps forward and prepares to attack Izuku from behind, but Izuku dodges the elderly Hero's attempt by jumping into the air above him. Izuku, seeing that he is in a perfect position, sends a One For All enhanced punch at Gran Torino. However, the elderly Hero manages to dodge Izuku's attempt. Izuku starts falling down while Gran Torino leaps from the wall and strikes Izuku in his stomach, smacking Izuku down onto the ground and causing One For All to stop its flow. Gran Torino sees that three minutes are up and ends the mock battle for now. Izuku laments on his lack of ability to keep the activation of One For All throughout his body properly. However, Gran Torino compliments Izuku's intelligence. The elderly Hero notes to himself that Izuku has dramatically changed in such a short space of time and compliments Izuku for being able to graze him (a cut is shown on Gran Torino's face) even though he was using his own power earnestly. Gran Torino states Izuku that he must get used to using One For throughout his body and informs him that they will continue training after breakfast. After breakfast, Izuku continues his training with Gran Torino.[47]
Izuku continues his training in gaining proper control of One For All with Gran Torino for two days. It is the third day at 5:00 PM, Izuku is on the floor injured due to his training. Gran Torino decides to end Izuku's training in One For All, not wanting Izuku to become stale due to fighting him all the time. Izuku protests but Gran Torino denies Izuku's request to continue training in One For All. Gran Torino declares that they will move on to phase two which is workplace experience. Izuku cleans himself up and puts on his Hero costume. Izuku and Gran Torino leave the apartment. Gran Torino tells Izuku that fighting him all the time will make him stale and now wants Izuku to experience fighting in all types and kinds of situations. Gran Torino tells Izuku that they will be going on an exursion and calls for a taxi. In the taxi, Gran Torino explains that highly populated areas are where crime is rife, causing Izuku to ask if they will be taking a train to Shinjuku to which Gran Torino says they will. Izuku realizes that they will be crossing Hosu along they way and begins thinking about Tenya, worried about him and decides to contact him later. The taxi takes Izuku and Gran Torino to the train station where they board a train that will take them to Shinjuku. The train passes Hosu. On the train, Izuku tells Gran Torino that they will arrive at night, to which Gran Torino replies that they will. Gran Torino explains that many villains appear at night and thus they will be able to get experience more easily. Izuku takes out his smartphone and sees that Tenya has read his message but did not reply. Suddenly, the train experiences an emergency stop and a Pro Hero comes crashing into the train, much to Izuku's and Gran Torino's shock. Immediately afterwards, a creature that looks similar to Noumu appears. Izuku tries to take action, but Gran Torino orders Izuku to stay put. Gran Torino jumps from his seat and slams himself into the Noumu-like creature, smashing the Noumu-like creature and himself out of the train and into the air above Hosu. Izuku goes to check on Gran Torino but sees that a part of Hosu is ablaze. Izuku wonders what is transpiring and starts worrying about Tenya's safety.[48]
Izuku exits the train and starts running towards Hosu. In Hosu, Izuku witnesses the battle between the Pro Heroes and the two Noumu-like creatures. Izuku is surprised that Tenya isn't at the battle and starts pondering. Izuku quickly figures out that Tenya came to Hosu to find and hunt down the Hero Killer Stain. Izuku leaves the battlefield and searches for Tenya. Izuku manages to find Tenya in an alley where he is on the ground injured and Stain is about to kill him. Izuku activates One For All throughout his body, dashes at great speed, and punches Stain in the face, preventing the Hero Killer from finishing off Tenya. Izuku announces his arrival and declares that he came to save Tenya.[49]
Izuku asks Tenya if he can move, but Tenya tells Izuku that he is immobilized. Stain praises Izuku for his efforts and then threatens Izuku. Izuku plans on what to do; two people are injured and require protection. Izuku decides that he must protect Tenya and the Pro Hero by trying to drive Stain away. Tenya orders Izuku not to get involved since his fight with Stain has nothing to do with him. Izuku responds to Tenya's order, saying that Heroes would not be able to do anything by following Tenya's logic. Izuku puts on a brave face and says that getting involved in other people's business is one of the principal qualities of a Hero, causing Stain to smile. Izuku and Stain begin their battle; Izuku activates One for All Full Cowl throughout his body and Stain charges at the young Hero. Izuku manages to get close to Stain and runs through Stain's legs, evading the Hero Killer's katana and dagger. Stain counters by slashing at Izuku with his katana, but Izuku dodges by jumping into the air and above him. Izuku, above the Hero Killer, uses 5% Detroit Smash on Stain, delivering a powerful blow to Stain's head. Stain, unfazed by Izuku's move, licks his dagger and activates his Quirk, immobilizing Izuku. Stain, impressed with Izuku's actions, decides to spare Izuku but prepares to kill both Tenya and the Pro Hero. Izuku yells at Stain to stop but to no avail. Suddenly, two columns of fire and ice attack Stain, but Stain manages to avoid the attack in the nick of time. Shouto reveals himself and tells Izuku that he texted him more information than usual and came running. Izuku is surprised that Shouto showed up.[50]
Izuku asks Shouto why he is here and is shocked that Shouto is using his fire power. Izuku watches Shouto's battle with Stain; Izuku warns Shouto to not let Stain get his blood. Stain jumps into the air and prepares to stab Shouto with his katana. Izuku realizes that he can move and activates One For All Full Cowl. Izuku, using enhanced jumping speed, appears before Stain and grabs him, attempting to throw him onto the ground. The Hero Killer retaliates by knocking Izuku away with his elbow, causing Izuku to fall onto the ground. Izuku informs Shouto that he could have been released from Stain's Quirk due to either the number of targets thinning the effect, how much blood Stain has ingested or blood types; Stain praises Izuku for figuring out his Quirk. Shouto tells Izuku that avoiding close quarters combat and holding out is their best course of action against Stain with Izuku agreeing with him, telling Shouto that he will draw Stain's attention while he acts as support. Izuku and Shouto team up to battle Stain. Izuku activates One For All Full Cowl and tries to attack the Hero Killer, but Stain slashes at Izuku with his katana, causing Izuku's leg to bleed; Stain licks his katana and activates his Quirk, which paralyzes and immobilizes Izuku. Izuku apologizes to Shouto.[51]
After Tenya breaks Stain's katana and kicks him away as well as in the process save Shouto, Tenya apologizes to Izuku for making him spill unnecessary blood, to which Izuku tells him not to worry. Izuku begins to feel movement within himself and gets up. Izuku activates One For All Full Cowl. Using his enhanced speed, Izuku jumps off Shouto's ice platform and heads towards Stain. Izuku punches Stain in the face with his enhanced might while Tenya attacks Stain with Recipro Extend.[52]
Stain makes one last ditch attempt to kill Tenya but Tenya and Shouto attack him, causing him to lose consciousness. Izuku and Tenya land safely thanks to Shouto's ice ramp. Shouto decides to tie Stain up with Izuku suggesting that they remove his weapons first. Izuku, Shouto, Tenya and the Pro Hero leave the alley with an unconscious Stain in tow. The tired Izuku is carried by the Pro Hero; the Pro Hero laments for failing as a Hero but Izuku says to him that it isn't his fault as Stain is far too powerful when it comes to one-on-one battles. Eventually, Gran Torino arrives and comically propels his foot into Izuku's face, annoyed that Izuku did not stay put. Tenya apologizes to Izuku and Shouto for his unheroic actions, but Izuku claims that he is also sorry for overlooking Tenya's pain even though he is his friend. Suddenly, the winged Noumu-like creature appears and grabs Izuku. Suddenly, Stain awakens, frees himself and defeats the winged Noumu-like creature as well as saves Izuku. Izuku is shocked at Stain's action.[53]
After Endeavor arrives, Izuku tries to break away from Stain. Stain's bandaged mask falls off and reveals his true face, shocking Izuku. Stain walks forward and declares that the only one who is allowed to kill him is All Might, unleashing a bloody malefic aura in the process. Izuku becomes terrified and unable to move due to the fear. After Stain loses consciousness for the last time, Izuku along with Shouto and Tenya are taken to the Hosu General Hospital to have their wounds treated. The next day at Hosu General Hospital, the recuperating Izuku states to Shouto and Tenya that it is a miracle that they are still alive as Stain could probably have killed him if he wanted to. Gran Torino arrives wanting to speak to Izuku but tells Izuku that he has a visitor; the Chief of Hosu Police, Tsurugamae Kenji. Tsurugamae tells Izuku, Shouto and Tenya that the Hero Killer is undergoing treatment. He states that Izuku, Shouto and Tenya acted on their own without the supervision of their superiors and as such violated the rules, thus they along with their superiors (Gran Torino, Endeavor and Manuel due to their negligence) will be given punishment. Shouto becomes furious that Tsurugamae expected them to follow the rules and let people die as a result. Izuku, Gran Torino and Tenya stop Shouto. However, Tsurugamae states that there were limited witnesses and as a result there will not be any punishment for Izuku, Shouto and Tenya but they won't be receiving any praise either from the public as the events that occurred yesterday will be covered up. Izuku and his friends thank the Chief of Hosu Police for not punishing them. Tsurugamae states that Izuku along with Shouto and Tenya have a promising future and thanks them for their heroic actions.[54]
Izuku gets a call from Ochako who asks him about his condition. Izuku says he is alright to which Ochako replies that he should get some rest and will talk to him at Yuuei. Afterwards, Izuku is flustered that he talked to a girl on the phone. Izuku returns to the room where Tenya reveals that his left hand's fingers won't move properly. Tenya states that until he becomes a true Hero, he will leave his left hand in its injured state as a reminder of his un-heroic actions during the encounter with the Hero Killer. Izuku thinks that apologizing would have little effect and sees that Tenya realizes his mistake. Izuku says to Tenya that his hand is also like his; Izuku states that they must become stronger together to which Tenya agrees. Shouto apologizes causing Izuku to ask why; Shouto states that whenever he is involved, people's hands go bad. Izuku is surprised that even Shouto can crack a joke, causing the three young Heroes to laugh together.[55]
At the end of the week, workplace training comes to an end. Outside Gran Torino's apartment, Izuku thanks Gran Torino for looking after him; Izuku praises Gran Torino for his training as it has allowed him to become stronger. Gran Torino advises Izuku to maintain his control and composure when using One For All and to not go over the 5% limit. Izuku says that he will comply. Izuku asks Gran Torino a question; why a strong Hero like him isn't known by society. Gran Torino replies that he wasn't interested in the Hero life and that the only reason he became a certified Hero was for a certain goal and nothing else. Gran Torino tells Izuku to ask All Might about the whole story. As Izuku leaves, Gran Torino ponders that both All Might and Izuku are alike; having the same charisma. Gran Torino asks Izuku his name; Izuku thinks than Gran Torino went back to being senile, but realizes what he truly wants. Izuku tells Gran Torino that his name his Deku. Gran Torino smiles at the response. Izuku returns to Yuuei. In Class 1-A, Izuku appears next to Tenya and Shouto. Some of the class comment on Endeavor rescuing them from the Hero Killer, to which Shouto agrees as well as Izuku. After Tenya states his resolve to become a Hero anew, Izuku smiles. Class 1-A has Foundational Hero Studies next; All Might says that their lesson will be a rescue training race through Playing Ground Gamma (a construction site with many densely packed lanes which makes it look like a labyrinth). The class must race through the construction site and to the area in the middle to meet up with All Might. Class 1-A will split into four groups of five for the training lesson. Izuku, along with Ojiro, Tenya, Mina and Hanta are the first group that will partake in the rescue training race. The race begins; Izuku activates One For All Full Cowl and begins maneuvering through the construction site with ease; using his enhanced speed and agility to jump and move through the construction site. Many of Class 1-A are surprised by Izuku's movements. However, while moving towards the area, Izuku accidentally slips, causing him to lose his lead and arrive last. Izuku realizes that he needs to take into consideration where he is jumping in places without stable footholds. All Might approaches Izuku, telling him that he surprised him with his improvement. All Might tells Izuku that after the lesson is finished, he should come to his place because he wants to talk to Izuku about the story of him and One For All.[56]
After Foundational Hero Studies is finished, Izuku heads to the boys' locker room to change into his school uniform. While changing, Izuku wonders why All Might was so serious. Afterwards, Izuku meets with All Might in the Break Room. All Might tells Izuku to lock the door and then apologizes to Izuku for not being at his side during the Hosu incident, to which Izuku replies that he doesn't have to apologize. All Might says that Izuku's blood was ingested by the Hero Killer,reminding Izuku about One For All transfer and inheritance method, causing Izuku to panic (thinking that One For All is in Stain's possession). However, All Might tells Izuku that he still has One For All because One For All won't be transferred to a new recipient unless the user wishes it, thus One For All cannot be forcibly stolen, although it can be forcibly passed on. All Might tells Izuku that One For All is a special Quirk and begins telling izuku One For All's origin. All Might says that One For All is derived from a Quirk that has existed since the beginning. All Might says that long ago during the Quirk phenomenon, society had not adapted to the idea of having Quirks which caused an age of upheaval to arise ; a man possessing a Quirk called All For One stole many Quirks and used his new overwhelming power and influence to gather and unify people under his command. The man used the people he gathered as pawns for his plans which allowed to take over Japan and made himself its evil ruler. Izuku says that he has heard rumors but this story is not in any textbook causing All Might to reply that underground dealings are never recorded in the textbooks. Izuku asks how this man is related to One For All. All Might says that All For One can grant Quirks but those who were not able to handle the strain became braindead like Noumu. All Might explains that there were cases for those who did survive the procedure where their Quirks mutated. All Might tells Izuku another story; the man who would eventually become Japan's evil ruler had a younger brother; the man used All For One and forcibly gave his younger brother a Quirk that stockpiles power. However, the younger brother already had a Quirk, a Quirk that can transfer itself to others. The younger brother's Quirks (one that stockpiles power and the other that can transfer itself) merged together and became One For All. All Might notes the irony that justice was born in the bowels of evil. Izuku says that it is impossible for the man who ruled Japan in the distant past to be alive. All Might theorizes that the man stole a Quirk that stopped his aging or a Quirk that granted him immortality. All Might explains that the younger brother, whose Quirks became One For All, fought against his older evil brother but could not defeat him. The younger brother decided to pass on One For All to the next generation so that one day it will accumulate enough power to defeat the older brother's All For One; All Might says that he was finally the successor that defeated the older brother, or so he thought. All Might tells Izuku that the man possessing All For One has returned and is leading the Villain Alliance. All Might finishes his story by saying that One For All is a power that is meant to stop All For One and that Izuku will also have to confront the man. All Might apologizes for giving Izuku so much information. Izuku says that whatever task All Might gives him he will accomplish no matter what as long as All Might is by his side. All Might thanks Izuku. Back in class, Shouta reveals that Class 1-A will be going to a forest lodge during the summer break.[57]
End of Term Test Arc
One week before the end of term test, Izuku encourages Denki and Mina to do their best because he wants to go to the forest lodge with them; Tenya also encourages them while Shouto remarks that if he had just attended classes normally then he would not have such low grades, to which Denki asks Shouto to mind his words.In the lunchroom, Izuku, Tenya, Shouto, Ochako, Tsuyu and Tooru eat at a table, discussing about how they will perform in the end of term test. After Itsuka reprimands Neito, she reveals that the exercise test is a battle simulation fighting against robots like the Entrance Exam. Back in class, Izuku reveals the content of the exercise test to the class, much to Denki and Mina's happiness Katsuki confronts Izuku, saying that Izuku is starting to get on his nerves. Ochako wonders if Katsuki is referring to Izuku's movements during the Foundational Hero Studies. Katsuki says to Izuku that he doesn't want the same hollow result like the Sports Festival. Katsuki says that they will determine who is the better man by their grades; Katsuki remarks that he will show the power gap between them and defeat him. Seething, Katsuki says that he will also defeat Shouto as well. Katsuki angrily walks out. On the day of the exercise test, Mr Principal reveals that Class 1-A will be fighting against Yuuei's teachers in their exercise test. Shouta says that Izuku and Katsuki will be paired together, much to their shock. Izuku and Katsuki become more surprised to learn that they will be facing All Might in combat for their exercise test. All Might tells the duo to cooperate together to defeat him.[58]
All Might, Izuku and Katsuki get onto a bus and drive to an uninhabited city where the test exercise will take place. All Might, Izuku and Katsuki arrive in the city. All Might explains the test exercise: Izuku and Katsuki have two options of winning and passing the test exercise; they must either handcuff All Might or one of them must escape from the battlefield. Izuku and Katsuki have to accomplish either fighting to handcuff their opponent or one of them must escape the battlefield in 30 minutes. Izuku notes that this will test their flight or fight decision skills. All Might puts on super compact weighted bracelets to give himself a handicap. The test exercise begins. Katsuki decides to fight All Might in order to handcuff him while Izuku suggests that avoiding the fight with All Might and escaping is a better course of action. Katsuki ignores Izuku's suggestion and begins going toward All Might. Izuku tells Katsuki that the idea of him beating All Might is ludicrous. Katsuki smacks Izuku onto the ground; Katsuki angrily orders him to stop talking while Izuku says that he is talking because he wants them to pass. Izuku and Katsuki get into an argument; Katsuki declares that he can pass the test himself and didn't need Izuku's help in the first place while Izuku says that Katsuki's bad anger is the reason nobody likes him. Suddenly, All Might throws a punch which devastates the area Izuku and Katsuki are in which causes Izuku to fall down.[59]
Izuku is shocked at the level of All Might's (even though he knows that All Might is handicapped and severely weakened to begin with). All Might declares to the duo that he is a villain and collateral damage means nothing to him. All Might charges at the duo. Feeling All Might's pressure, Izuku tells Katsuki that they have no chance of winning and should run away. However, Katsuki refuses to run away. Katsuki uses Stun Grenade against All Might which distracts him. Katsuki charges at All Might, but the Symbol of Peace grabs Katsuki's face, stopping his advance. Katsuki launches a flurry of Explosions against All Might. However, Katsuki's Explosions do not even scratch All Might. All Might slams Katsuki down onto the ground. All Might turns his attention to Izuku who planned on running away. All Might questions Izuku on his decision to escape. Izuku recalls the Hero Killer and activates One For All Full Cowl, wondering why he suddenly recalled the Hero Killer. Izuku jumps into the air, but Katsuki has also jumped into the air; the duo collide into each other as a result. After the recoil, Izuku begs Katsuki to escape with him as they have no chance of winning. Angry, Katsuki still refuses to escape, saying that he will win because that is what a Hero does. Izuku remembers Katsuki's past; that he admired All Might as a Hero because he always won in the end regardless of the situation he was in. Izuku tries to convince Katsuki otherwise but to no avail. Suddenly, All Might appears in the air with a guardrail in his hands; All Might slams the guardrail on Izuku which pins him down to the ground. Then, All Might punches Katsuki in the stomach, greatly injuring him and sending him flying backwards. All Might prepares to finish off Katsuki; Katsuki tries to move but to no avail. Suddenly, Izuku activates One For All Full Cowl and breaks free of the guard rail; Izuku charges and punches Katsuki out of harms way. Izuku grabs Katsuki and leaps into an alley to escape from All Might. Izuku tells Katsuki to not say that he would rather lose, asking Katsuki to use his strength before giving up and reminds Katsuki that he is the kid that never gives up on winning. In their childhood, Katsuki manages to beat 4th graders and says that the Number One Hero always wins in the end while Izuku admiringly looks on. All Might chases after Izuku and Katsuki. Suddenly, Katsuki appears from behind and attacks All Might with an Explosion which distracts All Might. However, one of Katsuki's Grenade Bracers is missing. Suddenly, Izuku appears behind All Might with Katsuki's missing Grenade Bracers equipped on him. Katsuki yells at Izuku to commence his attack; Izuku aims the Grenade Bracer at All Might and releases the trigger. Izuku releases the grenade pin and blasts an immense Explosion at All Might at point blank range. After the Explosion is finished, Izuku and Katsuki dash towards the exit.[60]
However, All Might catches up to Izuku and Katsuki and defeats them; All Might holds the injured Izuku in the air with his arm.[61]
A minute ago, Izuku and Katsuki are running towards the escape gate after blasting All Might with an immense explosion. Izuku spots the escape gate and notes that if one of them passes through the escape gate they pass the practical test. While running, Izuku isn't able to see All Might and wonders if he fainted, to which Katsuki admonishes Izuku for thinking that way. Katsuki tells Izuku that if All Might catches up he will launch Izuku using his bracer. Suddenly, All Might appears before the two, asking Katsuki what he plans to do after that, shocking Izuku and Katsuki. Before the young heroes can react, All Might crushes Katsuki's Grenadier Bracers into pieces, telling the duo that the weights are forcing him to use only a minuscule of his strength; All Might proceeds to pin down Katsuki with his foot and dangles Izuku in mid air. Back in the present, Recovery Girl announces that Shouto and Momo are the first team to pass the exam. All Might is surprised to learn that his colleague, Shouta, has been defeated. Izuku tries activating One For All Full Cowl but All Might stops him and throws him onto the ground. All Might decides to finish off Izuku and Katsuki. Suddenly, Katsuki gets up and launches a big explosion against All Might, which distracts the Symbol of Peace. While All Might is distracted by the light, Katsuki grabs Izuku and throws Izuku towards the escape gate with an Explosion. To prevent Izuku from escaping, All Might uses New Hampshire and blasts himself into Izuku which crushes Izuku due to All Might's great weight and sends him tumbling down. Katsuki chases after All Might; Katsuki tells All Might that the Grenadier Bracers were to help him use his maximum Explosions without risk and admits that he was a fool for thinking that he could win without taking risks. Katsuki uses a huge Explosion against All Might (similar to the Explosion in the Sports Festival) and tells Izuku to escape; Izuku struggles to get up. Katsuki decides to sacrifice himself to hold off All Might so that Izuku has time to escape; Katsuki uses another huge Explosion against All Might. However, although the great Explosions have distracted All Might, the Symbol of Peace is still unscathed. Izuku gets up and prepares to activate One For All Full Cowl so that he can leap towards the escape gate. Not allowing Izuku to make an escape, All Might prepares to attack Izuku but Katsuki intercepts All Might's attempt. Izuku successfully activates One For All Full Cowl and begins his escape while All Might smashes Katsuki into the ground. Izuku sees that Katsuki is in trouble. Despite being greatly injured, Katsuki yells at Izuku to escape and bites All Might's hand. All Might ignores Katsuki's desperate attempt and tells Izuku that he won't allow him to escape. Surprisingly, Izuku does not rush towards the escape gate; instead, Izuku rushes back to help Katsuki. While rushing to help, Izuku remembers All Might's words; that when times are scary and uncertain, you face it all with a smile. Izuku smiles and punches All Might in the face. While All Might is suffering from slight recoil, Izuku grabs Katsuki who has fallen unconscious. Izuku rushes towards the escape gate with Katsuki in tow. All Might shrugs off Izuku's punch and watches him escape. Izuku passes through the escape gate along with the unconscious Katsuki in tow, which allows Izuku and Katsuki to pass the practical test.[62]
After Izuku and Katsuki pass the practical exam, All Might carries them to Recovery Girl's tent to be healed. Recovery Girls scolds All Might for not restraining himself during his battle with Izuku and Katsuki. Recovery Girl asks All Might to take Izuku and Katsuki back to Yuuei to recover. However, a conscious and healed Izuku requests if he can stay and watch the remaining fights as he would like to observe and analyze the other Pro Heroes and his classmates. Recovery Girl allows Izuku to watch the remaining fights. While All Might leaves carrying an unconscious Katsuki in his arms, he notes that Izuku will be extraordinarily strong one day. Izuku and Recovery Girl watch the remaining fights. Recovery Girl comments on Fumikage and notes that he has brittle defense and struggles against numerable opponents, noting that Tsuyu is a person who is usually supportive in combat and can help Fumikage while Fumikage can help her with his strength, to which Izuku agrees with Recovery Girl's assessment. Izuku watches the battle between Denki and Mina against Nedzu and wonders if his classmates will be all right while Recovery Girl comments that Nedzu was toyed by humans in the past and as a result whenever he is in battle, his true character shows. Izuku and Recovery Girl watch the battle between Kyouka and Kouji against Present Mic; Izuku notes that the challenge revolves around sound and how they will be able to beat a Quirk that cancels out sound. After Kouji and Kyouka pass, Izuku is glad to see that his classmates are passing one by one, but Recovery Girl points out that Minoru is running away, which surprises and intrigues Izuku.[63]
Quirk and Abilities
One For All (ワン・フォー・オール Wan fō ōru): Izuku's Quirk grants him superhuman strength and greatly enhanced agility. Though he has yet to demonstrate superhuman speed, enhanced reflexes, and high durability on the level of All Might, he has shown that he has a type of mental connection to the previous users of One For All.
- Detroit Smash (デトロイトスマッシュ Detoroito Sumasshu): The same as All Might's move, except Izuku does it in the form of an uppercut.
- 5% Detroit Smash (5 パーセント デトロイトスマッシュ 5 Pāsento Detoroito Sumasshu): Izuku activates One for All Full Cowl, then jumps into the air, and delivers an enhanced downward punch to the opponent.
- Delaware Smash (デラウエアスマッュ Derauea Sumasshu): Izuku flicks his finger to create a powerful shock wave.
- One For All Full Cowl (ワン・フォー・オール フルカウル Wan fō Ōru Furukauru): This technique allows Izuku to activate One For All throughout his body, letting the power course and flow through him instead of concentrating it in one location. Activating this technique gives him slightly enhanced strength, speed, and agility. It also prevents him from breaking his bones whenever he uses One For All.
Keen Intelect: Izuku has proven to be exceptionally intelligent on many occasions. He has displayed keen skills of observation and analysis. It is usually his intelligence that has helped him more than his Quirk. He was able to formulate a strategy that helped him along with Tsuyu and Minoru to escape the villains at the flood zone in the USJ. Izuku also has extensive knowledge on Pro Heroes and their Quirks as well. His intelligence has allowed him to figure out One For All's mechanisms, allowing him to utilize the Quirk more efficiently in a short space of time. Gran Torino even complimented Izuku's intelligence, saying that Izuku is the type of person who thinks before he acts.

- Metal Sheet (Sports Festival) - This was used to attack the the robots in the Sports Festival. Also he used it to slam hidden mines to propel himself forward.

Relationships
All Might
Izuku has always admired All Might since he was a small child and wanted to be just like him.
After earning All Might's respect after he just ran toward the slime monster, a mentor-student relationship bloomed between them and choose him as his successor as the "new" All Might. While All Might's training on Izuku was rough, the latter continued to give it his all. They grew closer as All Might listened to his resolve of training more than he has to become a great hero, impressing the hero.
All Might is his confidante, mentor, friend in and out of school and they share a mutual respect for each other's heroism ideals.
Katsuki Bakugou
Izuku and Katsuki have known each other since they were very young, but they cannot be considered friends. Upon being bullied by Katsuki his whole childhood and hating his guts, Izuku began to admire everything about him, as Katsuki had everything that he didn't. Ever since the end of the Battle Trial Arc, Izuku has not spoken to Katsuki on friendly terms due to Katsuki considering Izuku his arch-rival. Despite Katsuki's antagonism towards Izuku, Izuku still has respect for Katsuki.
Ochako Uraraka
Ochako was the first new person Izuku interacted with when he first came to Yuuei. Izuku has a great friendship and camaraderie with Ochako; they get along very well and their discussions are always really bright and friendly. It is implied that Izuku has a crush on Ochako, as he constantly blushes when ever she is with or near him and even started to like his once a demeaning nickname "Deku" when she said she liked the nickname. At the Sports Festival, Izuku was moved to tears to see that Ochako would team up with him even though he is worth a huge amount of points. Before Ochako's battle with Katsuki, Izuku offered to give her a strategy against Katsuki. When Katsuki accused Izuku of helping Ochako strategize against him, Izuku defended Ochako, saying that the strategy she used against him during their match was her doing.
Recovery Girl
She was one of the few people who know Izuku's quirk. Often, she scolds at Izuku for using his Quirk dangerously.
Tenya Iida
Izuku first thought that Tenya was a scary guy and that they wouldn't get along together, but as he got to know him better, he found out he was a very nice guy and they ended up becoming friends. They are usually seen together having friendly discussions. Izuku resigned as Class President and named his successor Tenya, knowing that he has better leadership qualities than him. After Tenya was defeated by Shouto, Izuku was saddened to see his friend lose. Since Izuku knew that Tenya has a grudge against Stain, Izuku tries to save Tenya from his death. While recuperating at Hosu General Hospital, both Izuku and Tenya resolve to become stronger together.
Tsuyu Asui
Tsuyu respects Midoriya for his heroic actions as well as his victory against Bakugou. During the Rescue Trial Arc, she was receptive of Midoriya's plan to subdue the swimming villains, showing not only respect, but also trust. After Shouto defeated Izuku in the Sports Festival, Tsuyu went to Recovery Girl's office to see if Izuku was fine or not.
Shouto Todoroki
Shouto saw Izuku as his arch rival due to him having connections with All Might (a person with whom his father has a major rivalry). Izuku, on the other hand, has a lot of respect for Shouto, admitting that Shouto is far stronger than him. After hearing Shouto's tragic backstory and seeing his sadness, Izuku started to show sympathy for Shouto's pain and resolved to help Shouto overcome his dark past by getting him to use his fire power, telling Shouto that the fire power belongs to him and not his father. Although Izuku lost to Shouto while trying to help him, Izuku's actions did have an impact on Shouto, as he has stopped rejecting his fire power. After the battle with Stain, Izuku and Shouto are on friendlier terms with each other.
Stain
Stain respects Izuku's reasoning to be a Hero and see a worth in letting Izuku live. Izuku, on the other hand, tries to save Tenya from Stain. Also, when Izuku was captured by on of the Noumu-like creatures, Stain was the one who saved him.
Trivia
- Izuku's nickname, "Deku", was given to him by Katsuki when they were little. "Deku" is another reading of his name 出久, and Bakugou uses it to mock Izuku, as "Deku" can mean "the one who can't achieve/do anything". Later, Ochako finds the nickname very inspiring because "Deku" gives off a feeling of "I can do it".
- Izuku is student no.18 in Class 1-A.
- Izuku ranked 7th during the Entrance Exam and last for the Quirk Apprehension Test.
- In the First Popularity Poll, Izuku ranked 1st, which currently makes him the most popular character in Boku no Hero Academia.
- Izuku's favorite food is Katsudon.
- Izuku has a tendency to ramble his thoughts out loud.
- The cover of chapter six that details Izuku body state that his tear glands gives his sweat glands a run for their money and the chapters of the manga show this to be true.
- Izuku was first planned as an adult.
