Synopsis
When it comes to protecting people in cities... a hero's job is complex and multifaceted. There's the actual rescuing... plus... dealing with enemies!! Can you really handle... both situations?
Kugo Sakamata in "Rescue Maneuvers Continued"

Kugo Sakamata ( (さか) (また) (くう) () Sakamata Kūgo?), also known as Killer Whale Hero: Gang Orca (ギャングオルカ Gyangu Oruka?), is the former No. 10 and the current No. 12 Pro Hero.[3] He is also the director of the Okuto Island Aquarium.[4]

He serves as an antagonist in the second phase of the Provisional Hero License Exam.

Appearance[]

Gang Orca is a tall, well-built man whose body has the features of a killer whale, thanks to his mutant-type Quirk. He has deep white eyes that feature several rings that circle his red pupils. At times he can look extremely menacing, which is why he's ranked third in heroes that look like villains.

Gang Orca's normal hero costume consists of a white suit with a high collar. The collar reaches all the way to his chin, and it is decorated with diamond shapes that are made to look like teeth. This goes with a pink tie made to look like a tongue is coming out. He also wears a killer whale-like cape over his back.

During the Provisional License Exam, Gang Orca sported a red vest over his torso and wore metal gauntlets on his arms.

Following the Paranormal Liberation War, Gang Orca now has a scar over his left eye.

Personality[]

Gang Orca escapes the hot wind prison

Gang Orca's villain persona.

Gang Orca appears to be a calm and focused hero who treats every situation seriously. He is friendly and a good comrade towards his fellow Pro Heroes. He was relieved that Tiger was able to rescue his ally and calmed him when he was worried about her condition.[5] Gang Orca also teased Best Jeanist on being unable to change Katsuki Bakugo's personality and reform his crude attitude.[6]

Gang Orca can put on a menacing and ruthless persona when required. He acted like a true villain during the latter stages of the Provisional Licensing Exam and was a consistent threat to the students. He is not above calling out the students on their mistakes. Despite his hard exterior, Gang Orca admits that he enjoys seeing the students trying to make up for their mistakes.[7]

The No. 12 Hero takes teaching aspiring heroes very seriously, as at the Remedial Course, he was very rude and belittling to the students who failed the licensing exam. Despite his harsh words and the menacing front, he puts on, he does really care about the students put under his teaching and desires to help motivate them so they can become heroes with heart. As pointed out by Present Mic, Gang Orca is actually a big softie underneath who loves kids. This was shown after he encourages them and their potential following the first remedial lesson, but then stumbles and loudly demands that they don't dare fail in an angry voice.

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Kugo was ranked 10th of Japan's Pro Heroes, before getting the spot of No. 12 after All Might's retirement. His fighting style is generally focused around routing his opponents using his marine physiology and paralyzing them with hypersonic waves. These waves can defend Kugo from oncoming attacks, as well as act as a deterrent at both close and long range. The enhanced physical parameters granted by his Orcinus Quirk enable Kugo to contend opponents in both aquatic and land-based environments.

As he is ranked highly, Kugo is a very powerful hero, which has been proven in his fight against the League of Villains. During the Kamino Incident, Kugo and Mt. Lady defeated multiple grades of Nomu, some of which were restrained by Best Jeanist. In the final stage of the Provisional Hero License Exam, further showcased his top-grade combat efficiency and completely dominated Yo Shindo, Inasa Yoarashi and Shoto Todoroki, 3 powerful students at their respective prodigal schools. Kugo primarily gained the upper hand against Inasa and Shoto due to the pair's initial infighting, which left them at the mercy of the Killer Whale hero and his sidekicks.[8] Afterward, with the intervention of Izuku Midoriya, Kugo found himself engulfed in the weakened elemental heroes' collaborative fire tornado before emerging to briefly clashing with the One For All inheritor, marking the end of the License Exam. By Kugo's own admission, he would have been overwhelmed by the teamwork of the trio of first-year students, if the battle had continued any further.

Gang Orca easily blocks Izuku's attack.

  • Enhanced Strength: Kugo possesses the strength of a killer whale, and it was shown that he is strong enough to overpower multiple levels of Nomu, as well as restrain someone with one arm.[9]
  • Enhanced Durability: Despite having an innate weakness to extreme heat, Kugo was able to endure being trapped inside a spiraling flame prison for several minutes using the bottle of water he carried on his person. He was even able to block Izuku Midoriya's Shoot Style with ease, though his gauntlet was damage as a result.[7]
  • Enhanced Speed: Kugo's orca physiology grants him impressive speed, in spite of his large stature. He was able to close the distance between himself and Shoto before the prodigal student could notice his approach.[8]

Quirk[]

Orcinus (シャチ Shachi?): Gang Orca's Quirk gives him the attributes and abilities of a Killer Whale. He has enhanced physical prowess and can produce hypersonic waves to paralyze his targets.

He can use his abilities on land, although his Quirk is superior in the water.

Relationships[]

Shishido[]

Shishido and Gang Orca are noted to be bitter rivals who are always at each other's throats. Regardless of this rivalry, it is shown they can cast aside their differences in order to work together on subduing a bank robber, which made their teamwork highly effective.

Trivia[]

  • Gang Orca's given name, Kugo, contains the kanji for "sky" ( ?) and "apprehend" ( go?), while his surname, Sakamata, is comprised of the kanji for "reverse" ( saka?) and "thigh" ( mata?).
  • The character of Gang Orca was originally conceived through Sakamata of Omagadoki Zoo, one of Kohei Horikoshi's previous works. Fittingly, Orca's real family name is Sakamata.
    • He was the second character to get this treatment, the first being Uwabami.
  • According to Kugo's Volume 13 profile:[10]
    • His favorite things are strong people and open water swimming.
    • He is constantly requested by aquariums all over Japan to perform shows and give lectures. However, Kugo's scary face and his personality often results in quite a few crying children at these events, which is something he secretly dreads.
  • Gang Orca is ranked third among heroes who look like villains.[11]
  • Gang Orca shares his Japanese and English voice actors with other characters.
