The My Hero Academia One-Shot, titled My Hero (僕のヒーロー Boku no Hīrō?), was created as pilot for the potential series. It was released in the 2008 Winter Issue of Akamaru Jump. It was also released in Shonen Jump+ on August 13, 2018.

Synopsis[]

An Aberrant is attacking when the "Healthies" come to the rescue. Just as they are about to use their Vegetable Dressing Lasers, Jack Midoriya barges through the crowd, telling them to switch to using Kaleidoscope Blade while on the ground. Later, in the Healthies office, Jack desperately tries to sell them the item as his heath issues become apparent.

Jack then rushes to the meeting, where Director Akahashi is discussing their low sales, nearing bankruptcy. She asks the rest of the employees why they are in the red despite the city having high Aberrant Forecasts and Hero Employment rates. They give varying responses, such as labor shortages or her outdated designs, dodging the fact of Akahashi's poor management, as we learn she inherited the company after her father died. Jack then bursts in, telling them he got a contract with the Healthies, which they celebrate and thank him for. He then borrows the blade, as we learn he's simply working for them to utilize their Hero items to become one himself. We also learn that an extremely famous and popular Hero called Positive helped him find his way as a child, inspiring him to become a Hero himself, which he told him through a fan letter he sent, and donning a costume nigh-identical to his.

As he goes out on patrol, he mistakes a cat and dog for an Aberrant, dwelling on the fact that due to his Anemia prevents him from getting a Hero license and that he has to resort to vigilantism. He then comes across an Aberrant which flings him away. He vows to defeat the Aberrant just as it is shot in the head. A western style Hero reveals himself, condemning Jack's costume and its resemblance to Positive. The Aberrant's body then twinges, causing the Hero to jump back. Jack asks if he's afraid of Aberrants, which the Hero refutes. As he walks away, he states that Positive was a pitiable Hero.

Back at the office, Jack is pouting. The director asks him what's up, and he shows her a photo of the Hero, telling her to not sell him any items. She tells him his name is Snipe and that he's rising in popularity, then questions Jack's reasoning. Jack states its because he badmouthed Positive, which riles Akahashi up as well, due to Positive buying their company's items. Just then, an employee comes in, telling them to stop talking about a presumed dead Hero, due to their development costs being over-budget. Akahashi explains its due to her upgrade off Positive's old Knuckles, then sending Jack off to sell it.

Hurrying off, Jack thinks he hears an Aberrant and changes into costume, only to catch Snipe surrounded by fans and a reporter. Snipe reaffirms his distaste for Positive when the reporter compares them, running off after hearing an Aberrant is attacking the West District, with Jack following, amazed at his speed. After they arrive, Snipe gets ready to shoot the Aberrant when Jack body slams it, calling out that Snipe is afraid of Aberrants and that he'll beat it first. The reporter from earlier confuses Jack for Positive due to their costumes and Positive's catchphrase "I won't say goodbye". Jack chases the Aberrant to a dead end where they face off. Akahashi happens to be passing by when she sees Jack beaten and dressed as a Hero, about to be eaten by the Aberrant, when Snipe comes in shooting the Aberrant, rubbing his neck which Jack notes.

Akahashi then carries Jack on her back, while Snipe says he broke the law, and Akahashi replying with a thank you. As they part, Snipe tells Jack not to reveal people's weaknesses to the public, as he once again jumps back at the movement of an Aberrant. At a park, Akahashi asks Jack, after he comes to, if he was just using them, the company, to become a Hero, and that's why he was so passionate. Jack breaks down, telling her that he wanted to become a Hero but he couldn't receive a license because of his body, and that he couldn't take down any Aberrants, asking her why he couldn't be a Hero. She tells him that despite his weak body, he still sells with all his energy, and that he's notably increased the company's sales after joining, while she's only been making a mess of it, saying that he's saving her. They then hear a noise.

Rewinding a bit, we learn the Aberrant survived and grew massively, capturing Snipe. Jack rushes up the side of building, as a note falls out of Snipe's pocket into Akahashi's hand. She reads it, learning its the note Jack gave Positive as a kid. Meanwhile, Jack takes off his costume and jumps towards the Aberrant, calling Snipe "Positive". He stabs the blade in the Aberrant to gain a hold, catching Snipe as he falls. He then hands Snipe the Knuckles, throwing him forward while falling down to the building, where the director catches him. The Knuckles then shoot a spinning top, digging into the Aberrant and exploding, killing it. As Snipe falls to the ground, he calls Jack a Hero, while Jack responds that he won't let him say "Goodbye".

Afterwards, Jack and Snipe are at the park, while the news reporters announce that Snipe is Positive. Snipe asks him when he realized, with Jack revealing it was due to his sniff neck, which Positive had a habit of rubbing. He then reveals that Snipe pretended to hate Positive because there was an Aberrant. Snipe tells him that after a near death experience, he couldn't get close to an Aberrant, but he devised a style to kill them without having to get close. He tells Jack that he kept the note because it reminded of his desire to be a Hero. He then stands up and says he's his Hero. We also see that Akahashi's company is booming after Positive's return.
